Indoor telephone cables are designed to interconnect telephones to
PABXs or to interconnect switching equipment to underground cable
via a main distribution frame (MDF).
This category comprises PVC sheathed wire and cable for use in buildings
and equipment, which include such types as equipment wires,
cross-connecting wires and switchboard cables.These cables can also
incorporate screens such as copper braids, lap wire and aluminium
polyester tapes.

Outdoor telephone cables are used to connect and interconnect subscribers' MDFs with main exchanges. They also provide for main exchange-to-exchange connections (trunk and junction cables). Types of outdoor telephone cable, sheathed in PE or PVC are made to a variety of international specifications. These include screened types, and screened and armoured types where protection is required for cables buried underground.
